Well, now that we have the time...let's WRITE!!!
Hello writers, I’m sure we can all agree that it’s been a weird start to 2020, and for the time being anyway, it’s going to remain that way. So, since we’re all stuck inside…let’s finally tackle those writing goals you put off in 2019!
Yeah, I know, I know. But take solace in the fact that you’re not alone. We ALL had writing goals we didn’t hit last year. For me personally, I did see some success with the long-awaited release of Towards the Moon with Fellini, about the last crazy adventure of the legendary filmmaker Federico Fellini, which I co-wrote, as well as Man of the House and a couple of sports books for Triumph Books that I edited. I also put the finishing touches on a couple other projects that will be released this year. That said, I’m far behind on many others (don’t even get me started on my sci fi novella!).
BUT, it’s never too late to jump back in! And now we all have a little extra time, so let’s use it! Let’s get you back on track to getting that project done.
Here are a few simple tips to help you make that happen:
*Set your goals and work your schedule. I know that sounds obvious, but really look at what you realistically can get done either month to month or week to week, depending upon your availability. Know what you want to accomplish by 2021 and break it down by working back.
*Focus on smaller assignments. As I’ve said, the idea of writing a book can be daunting to say the least. And that idea can also overwhelm and make it easier to say, “Not now.” But, if you break things up into smaller, more manageable chunks, it becomes easier to swallow.
*Don’t worry about it being good for now! I know that sounds strange, but honestly, too many writers get caught up in editing and re-editing themselves. Your goal now is to complete a rough working draft that you can then go back and finesse. Just get something done and trust that the polish will come later.
*Get help if you need it. If you’re feeling stuck, stagnant or just general unmotivated, reach out to me or someone else you trust to help you organize your thoughts, form a plan and keep you on track. We all have writing coaches if for nothing else that motivation and accountability.
*Lastly, take a look at those things that were holding you back last year and figure out how you can change or eliminate them. Dump the baggage and welcome in a new approach to get you to reaching your goals
I’m wishing you the best of luck and hoping you all stay safe! And when it comes to your writing, as always, I’m here for any help you might need!
